- Confirm your EIN, and decide your tax-status path: automatic church exemption, a determination letter, or a lettered ministry arm / fiscal sponsor
- Run the Green-Light Test: is the project community-serving (not worship/missions), and does it clear the funder's exclusions?
- Set up budget separation now — track the funded program's money apart from religious activities
- For any federal program, register free for SAM.gov and get your UEI (it takes time)
- For NSGP: contact your State Administrative Agency and find its deadline — it's earlier than the federal July 24 date
- For NSGP: get a vulnerability assessment for each building address you'll apply for
- For a food ministry: call your regional food bank and ask about becoming a partner agency
- Run the Live-or-Dead Check on any program from a listicle — confirm it on the funder's own current page
